VOLUNTEERING AT THE SCIENCE CENTER

Are you interested in having fun, meeting new people and being an ambassador of science literacy?  Consider becoming a Science Center volunteer!  We greatly value our volunteers who are willing to share their time, expertise and experience.   The Science Center offers volunteer opportunities for adults, teens ages 14 and older, and children at least 5 years old (accompanied by an adult companion).

As a Science Center volunteer, you will receive:

•    Free parking in the Science Center's lot during your volunteer shift
•    20% discount in the Science Center Gift Shop
•    After accumulating 20 hours of service, you receive free admission to the Science Center for one year
•    10% discount on the purchase of a Science Center family membership, science camp or rental space
•    Access to view IMAX films (during a volunteer shift)
•    An invitation to attend the volunteer recognition event held annually in the fall


Application Process

Please download the appropriate application below, complete and return it to the Volunteer Center via mail, emai here, or  fax (502) 561-6145. You may also contact the Volunteer Center at (502) 561-6100 ext. 6141 or send an email to request an application.

All volunteers are required to submit an application, attend an orientation session, and participate in area-specific training. Adults age 18 and older must also complete a background check prior to signing up for their first volunteer shift.

Volunteer Orientation

Orientation sessions for new Science Center volunteers will be offered monthly through June 2013*.  Sessions will take place at the Science Center; you will only need to attend one orientation session. Anyone interested in becoming a Science Center volunteer must attend orientation prior to participating in training sessions or volunteer opportunities.

*Note: Teens interested in volunteering at the Science Center June-August 2013, will attend a special orientation session in May 2013. See VolunTeen Program, Summer 2013 below for details.

Volunteer Training

After attending volunteer orientation, you are eligible to participate in area-specific training sessions. Click here for a list of current training opportunities. You may sign up for more than one training session. Additional training dates will be added to this page later this fall.


Scheduling a Volunteer Shift

Some of the volunteer opportunities at the Science Center require set shifts while others are a bit more flexible. All volunteer opportunities will be announced in monthly e-newsletters, which are sent on/about the first of each month. After receiving the email and reviewing the list of opportunities, you can send an email, call the Volunteer Center at (502) 561-6100 ext. 6141, or stop by the Volunteer Center to sign-up.
 

VolunTeen Program, Summer 2013
Grades 9-12

Note: The application process for the 2013 summer VolunTeen program is now open and accepting appliactions through April 30!

Teens interested in participating in this program must be in the 9th grade or higher.  (Those in the 8th grade during the 2012-2013 school year are eligible for the 2013 summer VolunTeen program.)  Teen volunteers who have previously participated in the program and who are interested in returning to the program in 2013 will need to notify the Volunteer Center by April 1, 2013. The application process for new teen volunteers will close April 30, 2013.
